Stanley is a town and civil parish in County Durham in England. Centred on a hilltop between Chester-le-Street and Consett, Stanley lies south-west of Gateshead.. The local economy was once based on coal-mining and other heavy industries; with their disappearance or substantial decline, Stanley is now primarily a commuter town. [2]
It is situated to the north-east of Consett. The Roman road Dere Street runs straight through the middle of Leadgate, today this is known as Durham Road and the B6309. The place-name 'Leadgate' is first attested in 1590 and derives from the Old English 'hlidgeat', which means 'swing-gate'. [1] [2]
A large area formerly used by Shotley Bridge Hospital was sold to a property developer, [16] which began to build a further 400 homes in 2013–2014.
