William C. Edwards, who started his career in journalism as a reporter for the weekly Denton Chronicle in 1886, took ownership of that newspaper and the city’s other weekly, the Denton County Record, and merged them into the Denton Record and Chronicle in 1901. Castleberry was born in 1929 in Denton, Texas to parents Claude and Isla Castleberry. [1] His father, Claude served on the city council of Denton from 1929 to 1930 and again in the 1950s. [2] Previous to winning the lottery Castleberry worked in sales and was planning to retire at the age of 62 before winning the sweepstakes at age 59. [1]
