Female Trouble is a 1974 American independent [1] dark comedy film written, produced and directed by John Waters.It stars Divine, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole, and Edith Massey, and follows delinquent high school student Dawn Davenport (played by Divine), who runs away from home, gets pregnant while hitchhiking, and embarks upon a life of crime.

The film was released in the John Waters Collection DVD box set along with the original NC-17 version of A Dirty Shame, Desperate Living, Female Trouble, Hairspray, Pecker, and Polyester. Lochary was the son of Dean and Mary Eileen (née McMahan) Lochary; his mother Mary was featured in two of Waters' films: Multiple Maniacs and Female Trouble. Donald Lochary, David's elder brother, died in July 2019; he also played a small, uncredited role in Female Trouble. [2] [3] Lochary was gay; in the '70s, he dated singer John Condon. [4]
Neurotic and delusional suburban housewife Peggy Gravel and her overweight maid, Grizelda Brown, go on the lam after Grizelda smothers Peggy's husband Bosley to death. A cross-dressing policeman arrests the pair and gives them an ultimatum: go to jail or be exiled to Mortville, a filthy shantytown ruled by the evil Queen Carlotta and her treasonous daughter, Princess Coo-Coo.
She also founded Female Trouble, More Female Trouble, and served as artistic director of Gay Sweatshop. Her plays have a feminist undertone. [2] She has written such plays as More Light, which has only one male speaking role, with almost entirely female casts. Since 1976 she has written more than twenty plays.
