According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources , there are approximately 50,000 lakes and small ponds, with a total surface area of 200,000 acres, and among these there are 2,200 lakes of 5 acres (2.0 ha) or greater with a total surface area of 134,000 acres. It was created in 1966 when the State of Ohio built a dam impounding 170 acres (0.69 km 2) of water on the upper drainage of the Little Yellow Creek. A lot of habitat improvement was done on what would be the bottom of the lake prior to the impoundment. It has about 5 miles (8.0 km) of shoreline and a maximum depth of about 26 feet (7.9 m).
The Senecaville Dam is located at the northwest end of the lake near the village of Senecaville. Originally completed in 1937, the structure was modified in 1982. [2] The dam is made of earthen construction and measures 49 feet (15 m) high by 2,350 feet (720 m) long.
