The very crowded gills are free; they are whitish at first but rapidly turn black and easily deliquesce. The short stipe measures 5–17 cm (2– 6 + 3 ⁄ 4 in) high by 1–2 cm in diameter, [ 5 ] is grey in colour, and lacks a ring.
The stem is bluish purple to black, and measures up to 10 cm (3.9 in) long by 4 cm (1.6 in) thick. Both the pore surface and the whitish cap flesh will stain pink to reddish gray, and eventually turn black after being cut or injured. Dick are synonyms of Hydnellum peckii.
