Grand Illinois Trail in Mundelein, Illinois. The Grand Illinois Trail (occasionally abbreviated GIT) is a multipurpose recreational trail in the northern part of the U.S. state of Illinois. At over 575 miles (925 km) in length, it is the longest trail in Illinois. [1] Parts of it are in the coast-to-coast American Discovery Trail. [2]
In Aurora, a short distance up the connecting Illinois Prairie Path is a large railroad roundhouse. One of two built in the 1850s, it was abandoned in 1974. By 1985 one roundhouse was demolished, the remaining one was refurbished and commercially developed. [10] [11]
The main attraction of the park is the 146-acre (59 ha) Lincoln Trail Lake, which was the third lake created in Illinois (1955-1956) using federal monies under the Dingell-Johnson Act. The lake's maximum depth is 41 feet (12 m). [4] The park offers camping, hiking, fishing and boating (outboard motors are limited to 10 horsepower (7.5 kW)).
The Chicago Lakefront Trail (LFT [1]) is a 18.5-mile-long (29.8 km) [2] partial shared-use path for walking, jogging, skateboarding, and cycling, located along the western shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago, Illinois. The trail passes through and connects Chicago's four major lakefront parks along with various beaches and recreational amenities.
The Prairie Trail is a 26-mile-long (42 km) [1] shared use path for walking and cycling, located in McHenry County, Illinois. The path is part of the Grand Illinois Trail and connects McHenry County to other trails in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is considered to be a good example of converting old methods of transportation to a new one. [2]
