Four of the five taken away by the Germans returned to the État after the end of the war, and were given numbers at the end of the class-list. The fifth locomotive went to the Chemins de Fer du Nord, where it was numbered 3.1150; the SNCF renumbered it 2-231.B.1 until 1947 when it was transferred to the Région Ouest and renumbered 3-231.F.784 ...
For example, the SNCF used 040.A., and 242.TA. where the PLM used 4.A., and 242.AT. Class letters A-N were used for existing designs, letters P onwards for SNCF designs. Others railways' designs taken over after World War II were usually given the letter U (American), W (British), X, Y, or Z (German).

État 231-011 to 231-060 was a small class of 4-6-2 steam locomotive of the Chemin de fer de l'État.. This series of 50 locomotives was built during 1910. After some difficult early days (involving a number of derailments), the locomotives later became part of the SNCF's 3-231.B class.
It was decided to equip the locomotive with a conventional high-pressure boiler and individual turbines for the axles.. The boiler chosen was of the classic fire-tube type. This boiler was pressed to 25 kg/cm 2 (2.45 MPa; 356 psi), the maximum pressure for this type of boiler, unlike 232.P.1 which had a water-tube boiler pressed to 60 kg/cm 2 (5.88 MPa; 853 ps
