FM 1623 was first designated in Blanco County in 1951, and ran from US 281 in Blanco to the west approximately 5.0 mi (8.0 km). Its length was extended to 10.3 mi in 1953 and increased again in 1954; the designation ended at the Gillespie County line.
Old Tunnel State Park is a railroad tunnel of the Fredericksburg and Northern Railway, which ceased operations in 1942. The property came under the care of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and was officially made a state park in 2012. It is located halfway between Fredericksburg and Comfort on Old San Antonio Road.

In 1856, New York City broker Francis Morris bought 23,000 acres (93.08 km 2; 35.94 sq mi) of land in Gillespie and Kerr counties for twenty-five cents an acre. He eventually sold off all but 16,000 acres (64.75 km 2; 25.00 sq mi), and hired his nephew Charles Morris to manage the acreage for horse breeding. Charles was ranch manager until 1910.
