Freeman Cobb (10 October 1830 – 24 May 1878) [1] was an American, born in Brewster, Massachusetts, who established the Cobb & Co stagecoach company in 1853, with partners John Murray Peck, James Scanlon and John B. Lamber.
In 1862, Cobb & Co left Melbourne and established headquarters in Bathurst, New South Wales, including new coach and harness factories which built them coaches "in the manner of" Abbot & Downing. [10] Most Australian-made coaches were 12 and 25 passenger vehicles. A coach for 60 passengers was built at Bathurst but proved a failure. [11]
The last advertised Cobb & Co coach runs were Arrowtown-Queenstown and Arrowtown-Dunedin in February 1925. [3] A Cobb & Co coach was paraded through Christchurch during their 75th anniversary celebrations in 1925. Concord coaches have been preserved at the Fairlie Heritage Museum [4] and Toitū Otago Settlers Museum. [5]
The original route, which established Cobb & Co.'s coach service, left Dunedin's Provincial Hotel on 22 November 1862. Present-day cavalcade routes vary each year in late February so as to finish in a different host town.

The Collection was originally on display in Toowoomba at the premises of Cobb & Co. Limited, Mr Bolton's road transport company, from 1965 until 1981. Jenny Cardell, Mr Bolton's daughter, and her husband, Adrian Cardell, purchased the Collection through their company Banks Pty. Ltd. in 1980. [5]
