A new container port opened at Holyhead in 1970, the container service between Holyhead and Dublin having begun two years earlier. Major changes were made to the port facilities, and the station hotel was demolished in 1978. Bigger ferry vessels came into use, and the Stena Lynx 1 catamaran began services in the early 1990s. [9]

During 2006, P&O's ferry and port operations were taken over by DP World. The Stena Estrid is a passenger and vehicle 'Ro-Pax' ferry which sails for Stena Line on its Holyhead–Dublin route. [1] She is the first ferry in the E-Flexer class, [2] and was delivered to the company on 15 November 2019. [3] [4] She made her maiden commercial crossing between Holyhead and Dublin on 13 January 2020. [5]
In October 2008 it was announced that the Stena Nordica would be returning to the Irish Sea replacing the Stena Seatrader and increasing capacity between Dublin and Holyhead. In March 2009 the Stena Nordica received a £2 Million refit [ 2 ] which improved passenger areas and brought the vessel into line with the rest of the Irish sea fleet.
The London to Dublin air route is the ninth busiest international air route in the world, and also the busiest international air route in Europe, with 14,500 flights between the two in 2017. [ 20 ] [ 21 ] In 2015, 4.5 million people took the route, at that time, the world's second-busiest. [ 20 ]
