This consisted of a Reading Room (currently the Tiled Hall cafe) on the ground floor, a lending library on the 1st floor and Reference Library on the 2nd floor. The "business" side was represented on the ground floor by the large pay office (currently the Central Lending Library) where local people came to settle their gas, water and rates bills.
The Leeds Library is the oldest surviving subscription library of its type in the UK. It was founded in 1768, [ 1 ] following an advertisement placed in the Leeds Intelligencer earlier that year. The first secretary was Joseph Priestley . [ 2 ]
The origins of the Collections can be traced back to 1950 when the poet and dramatist, Dorothy Una Ratcliffe, donated her archive material and printed books and pamphlets to Leeds University Library. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The Collections have since been augmented by additional donations and purchases.
