The Mayo Clinic Diet is a diet book first published in 1949 by the Mayo Clinic's committee on dietetics as the Mayo Clinic Diet Manual. [1] Prior to this, use of the term "diet" was generally connected to fad diets with no association to the clinic.
The main differential diagnosis is polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), although pain, stiffness and weakness at the level of the shoulders and pelvic girdle with associated systemic symptoms (fever, malaise, fatigue, weight loss) is more typical of PMR.
PMR sometimes goes away on its own in a year or two, but medications and self-care measures (e.g., eating the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables) can improve the rate of recovery.
