Donnie, the first order of business is to decide which Muncie you are going to run. The wide ratio (M20) transmission has a lower first gear with a wider spread between gears, so it will be easier to get the car rolling with something like 3.08 gears. The M21 and M22 are close ratio transmissions. They have a higher first gear making it harder ...
I use GM GL-4 80w-90 gear oil in my Muncie. Don't use synthetic oil cause it's too slippery. If it jumps out of gear then you have some worn parts, usually the sliders or the gear engagement arrow heads or forks. See my site for pics. Mark 70 Z28 M22 3.73 Z21 Z87 - Lunati 20120121 Roller Cam.
It is possible to install a new steel drive gear with the trans in the car. It is far easier when the trans is out of the car however. It is simply a matter of heating the drive gear up and pushing it onto position on the tailshaft. The M22Z gearset has a 2.98:1 1st gear ratio and it can be used with a 3.08:1 differential gear. The M22Z and a 3.08;1 combo will feel like you have a 4.17:1 1st gear takeoff feel when comparing it to an M21 with a 2.20:1 1st. Jody Haag 610-413-8015. Jody's Transmissions on Facebook.
Then, the tranny comes out of the bellhousing by unbolting 4 bolts and sliding the tranny staight back, until its out of the clutch and throw out bearing. then take off the bellhousing by unbolting it from the engine 6 bolts, i think. and theres your clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing and flywheel, they all held on by a couple of ...
Ray, There is a fill plug about half way up the case on the side away from the shift levers. Take the plug out, stick your finger in and see if you can feel any fluid. It should be at the level of the bottom of the hole. I have always just filled them until it just starts to run out of the fill hole, then put the plug in.
The overdrive gearset was designed for the person who may have rebuilt their differential but wants a little more top end cruising. The new Muncie 4 speed gearset's have a first gear ratio of: 2.20:1, 2.56:1, & 2.98:1. These three listed gearset's were designed to be used with a differential ratio of: 2.20:1 (M22 & M21) - 4.10:1.
The M-21 is the close ratio 4-speed. It was used on high performance models with numerically high rear end ratios. The M-22 was the "rock crusher". It had the same gear ratios as the M-21. The VIN is stamped on the tranny. The location may have varied. I haven't looked at mine in a while, so maybe someone else could be more specific.

All standard helix units failed at ~320 ft-lbf of torque with about 0.030” case stretch. All of the low helix sets failed at ~390 ft-lbf of torque with about 0.050” case stretch.
Depending on the drivetrain combination, racers normally bring the revs up to at least 2500/3000 before they hit the "go pedal" and release the clutch. Power shifting (gas to the floor, banging the gears) takes a bit of practice. Take it easy at first, because a missed shift and an overspeed can be an expensive lesson.
