The California African American Museum (CAAM) is a museum located in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, next to the California Science Center. The museum focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States.
The nearby Leimert Plaza Park is a gathering place in Leimert Park Village which has served as a hub of African-American art and culture in Los Angeles. [8] The second node will be located at 50th Street near Crenshaw High School and is themed "Dreams". This node was inspired by local architect Paul Revere Williams (1894 – 1980). [9]
In 1976, May Company offered space to the Museum of African American Art on the third floor of what later became Macy's. [30] Samella Lewis, who had founded the museum in 1975, wanted "to provide art services to students, scholars, teachers and lay persons concerned with the art and cultural history of the peoples of the African Diaspora." [31]
African Americans started migrating to the district in the mid 1960s, and by the early 1970s later were the majority. [4] In the 1970s, Crenshaw, Leimert Park and neighboring areas together had formed one of the largest African-American communities in the western United States. In 2006, the population of Crenshaw was around 27,600.
Baldwin Village was developed in the early 1940s and 1950s by architect Clarence Stein, as an apartment complex for young families.Baldwin Village is occasionally called "The Jungles" by locals because of the tropical trees and foliage (such as palms, banana trees and begonias) that once thrived among the area's tropical-style postwar apartment buildings. Leimert Park Village has historically served as a hub of African-American art and culture in Los Angeles, has been compared to both Harlem and Greenwich Village, [21] [6] and in 1998 was seen as "the cultural heartbeat of black Los Angeles."
