Eflornithine, sold under the brand name Vaniqa among others, is a medication used to treat African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) and excessive hair growth on the face in women. [ 1 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] Specifically it is used for the second stage of sleeping sickness caused by T. b. gambiense and may be used with nifurtimox .
Polycystic ovary syndrome, or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. [14] The syndrome is named after cysts which form on the ovaries of some women with this condition, though this is not a universal symptom and not the underlying cause of the disorder.
Eflornithine hydrochloride 13.9% cream (Vaniqa®) is a topical prescription medication that has been approved by the FDA as a treatment to reduce hair growth. [31] Eflornithine irreversible inhibits ornithine decarboxylase which is an important enzyme involved in hair growth. [5]
The pharmaceutical drug eflornithine hydrochloride (with the trade names Vaniqa and Follinil) inhibits the enzyme ornithine decarboxylase, preventing new hair cells from producing putrescine for stabilizing their DNA.
Nifurtimox/eflornithine is a combination of two antiparasitic drugs, nifurtimox and eflornithine, used in the treatment of African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness). [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It is included in the World Health Organization 's Model List of Essential Medicines .
Treatment of the second stage has involved eflornithine or a combination of nifurtimox and eflornithine for TbG. [2] [3] Fexinidazole is a more recent treatment that can be taken by mouth, for either stage of TbG. [3] While melarsoprol works for both types, it is typically only used for TbR, due to serious side effects. [3]
Eflornithine, one of the drugs used to treat sleeping sickness, is a suicide inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase. Nerve agent and related pesticides such as parathion are organophosphorus suicide inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase with aging times dependent on the lability of leaving groups present on the organophosphorus moiety of the molecule.
