As of 2024 this class is the largest cruise ship class ever constructed. Unlike other Royal Caribbean classes, the Vision class is not named for the first ship built; Vision of the Seas was the last ship in the class to be built [2]. Royal Caribbean had been promoting "Project Vision" for some time before ordering the first two ships in the class in 1992, [3] but Vision of the Seas was not ordered until 1994. [4]
The Freedom class is a group of three cruise ships for Royal Caribbean International. The first ship of the class, Freedom of the Seas , was the largest passenger ship in the world, and the largest ever built in terms of passenger capacity and gross tonnage, when it was built in 2006.
On 30 May 2013, Royal Caribbean announced that they had signed a contract with Meyer Werft for a third Quantum-class ship for delivery in mid-2016. [18] On 18 September 2014, the name of the third Quantum-class ship was announced to be Ovation of the Seas. [19] Ovation of the Seas was delivered to Royal Caribbean on 8 April 2016. [20]
The class' architecture was assigned to different architects and firms, some of which had no previous cruise ship experience. For example, the 1,350-seat La Scala Theatre on Voyager of the seas was designed by architect Wilson Butler Lodge, inspired by the Milan Opera House and bringing cruise-first features of Broadway theatres.
As some cruise ships have operated under multiple names, all names will be listed in the Status section, along with the history of the vessel, under the vessel's current or most recent name. If a vessel is not currently operating as a cruise ship, only the most recent operation will be listed here.
The Radiance class is a class of four cruise ships operated by Royal Caribbean built between 2001 and 2004 at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The class was preceded by the Voyager class and succeeded by the Freedom class. Radiance-class ships have a gross tonnage of 90,090, being smaller than the preceding Voyager class.
