He authored more than 50 books [3] on poetry, biographies, plays and short stories in both Sindhi and Urdu languages. His translations of Shah Jo Risalo , which was written by the 18th-century Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai , from Sindhi to Urdu language established him as an authority in his domain.
The 512-page book was published by Librería General de Victoriano Suárez of Madrid, Spain, in 1907. It contains works of Rizal such as poems and essays in "Spanish of literary merit"; some "translations and short papers" written in Tagalog, German, French, and English; and a complete listing of Rizal’s writings. Coates's Rizal Philippine Nationalist and Martyr is the second biographical account of the life and career of Rizal authored by a non-Filipino (the first was Vida y Escritos del Dr. José Rizal or "Life and Writings of Dr. José Rizal" written by W.E. Retana that was published in 1907, thus Coates's book on Rizal was the first European biography of Rizal since that year).
Originally written by Rizal in Spanish, the book has since been more commonly published and read in the Philippines in either Tagalog (the major indigenous language), or English. The Rizal Law requires Noli, published in 1887, and its 1891 sequel, El filibusterismo, to be read by all high school students throughout the country.
Charles E. Derbyshire (January 17, 1880 – April 10, 1933) was an American educator and translator active in the Philippines in the early 20th century. Derbyshire is best known for his English translations of Filipino nationalist José Rizal's novels Noli Me Tángere (1887) and El Filibusterismo (1891), titled The Social Cancer and The Reign of Greed, respectively.
