Catawba County is a member of the regional Western Piedmont Council of Governments. The county has been represented primarily by Republicans since World War II: no Democratic presidential candidate has won Catawba County since Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944. [14] Jimmy Carter is the last Democrat to manage even 40 percent of the county's vote.

Newton is a city in Catawba County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 12,968. [4] It is the county seat of Catawba County. [5] Newton is part of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Hickory is located in western Catawba County and extends westward into Burke County and Caldwell County. Interstate 40 passes through the southern part of the city, leading east 68 miles (109 km) to Winston-Salem and west 75 miles (121 km) to Asheville. U.S. Route 70 (Conover Boulevard) is an older east–west route through the city.
Claremont is located east of the center of Catawba County. U.S. Route 70 passes through the center of town, leading west 4 miles (6 km) to Conover and east 4 miles (6 km) to Catawba. Interstate 40 passes just north of the town, with access from Exit 135. I-40 leads west 12 miles (19 km) to Hickory and east 16 miles (26 km) to Statesville.
