Piano techs have a specialized tool that they can slip between the strings to dust off the soundboard. I'd recommend that you let your tech clean it out for you. I imagine you'll be bringing him/her out to tune the piano at the least, in addition to whatever repairs/regulation work it needs.
I've thoroughly cleaned mine - a 25 yr old Baldwin that I don't think had ever really been touched. I used long kitchen utensils like steel skewers and a long flat spatula (I was too lazy to go out into the garage to find better implements!) hooked onto clean microfibre cloths to push them around under the strings throughout to clean/dust the soundboard.
After I made my string cover,... I had my tech clean the inside of my piano,... if I remember correctly I paid about $50,... Thinners made some impact. But found professional grade automotive 'cut' liquid did a good job in the accessible areas leaving a pretty good clean paint result.

I believe for the piano owner that is not the Technician- vacuuming can help clean out the grand piano. Use of a vacuum brush with long soft bristles (best are those of horse hair) and gently go over the inside taking extra care around the dampers. When I clean I use vacuum, soundboard steele and rag, and large paint brushes.
Has anyone had success cleaning bass strings on grand pianos to restore sound? I'm working on a grand with extremely tubby sounding bass strings and was wondering if it's worth my time to try to clean them first before jumping in and ordering custom replacements. The whole piano is extre...
Since my polished ebony Kawai K-25 arrived last week, I has constantly cleaned my kids' finger prints from the piano. Although I use the yellow soft cloth provided with the piano, the soft cloth still leaves small scratches on the piano. I'm afraid that these small scratches will eventually make the piano dull.
