Whangārei (Māori: [faŋaːˈɾɛi]) [4] is the northernmost city in New Zealand and the largest settlement of the Northland region.It is part of the Whangarei District, created in 1989 from the former Whangarei City, Whangarei County and Hikurangi Town councils to administer both the city and its hinterland.
Whangarei District had a population of 96,678 in the 2023 New Zealand census, an increase of 5,718 people (6.3%) since the 2018 census, and an increase of 19,683 people (25.6%) since the 2013 census. There were 47,211 males, 49,218 females and 252 people of other genders in 35,535 dwellings.

Whangarei District Council (Māori: Te Kaunihera o Whangarei) [citation needed] is the territorial authority for the Whangarei District of New Zealand. [1] The council consists of the mayor of Whangarei and 13 ward councillors, and is led by the mayor. Vince Cocurullo has been the mayor since 2022.

Whangarei Harbour Marine Reserve is located in an inter-tidal area between Onerahi and Waikaraka, and another around Motukaroro Island, at Reotahi, Whangārei Heads. The Motukaroro Island reserve is popular with snorkelers due to the large amount of marine life seen there.

Whangārei (formerly Whangarei) is a New Zealand parliamentary electorate that was first created for the 1972 election. The electorate is usually a reasonably safe National seat, and was held for long periods by John Banks ( 1981 –1999) and Phil Heatley ( 1999 –2014), before being won in the 2014 election by Shane Reti .
