Fluorometholone (INN, BAN, JAN) (brand names Efflumidex, Flucon, FML Forte, FML, others), also known as 6α-methyl-9α-fluoro-11β,17α-dihydroxypregna-1,4-diene-3,20-dione, is a synthetic glucocorticoid which is used in the treatment of inflammatory eye diseases.
Glaucoma medication is divided into groups based on chemical structure and pharmacologic action. The goal of currently available glaucoma therapy is to preserve visual function by lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients that have an increased intraocular pressure.
Netarsudil, sold under the brand name Rhopressa among others, is a medication for the treatment of glaucoma. [1] [2] [3] In the United States, in December 2017, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a 0.02% ophthalmic solution for the lowering of elevated intraocular pressure in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Omidenepag, sold under the brand name Eybelis among others, is a medication used for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. [ 1 ] [ 3 ] Omidenepag was approved for medical use in Japan in 2018, [ 3 ] and in the United States in September 2022.
Travoprost, sold under the brand name Travatan among others, is a medication used to treat high pressure inside the eye including glaucoma. [4] Specifically it is used for open angle glaucoma when other agents are not sufficient. [5] [4] It is used as an eye drop. [4] Effects generally occur within two hours. [4]
In addition to its potent corticosteroid activity, fluorometholone acetate is a progestogen. [4] It has been studied in the treatment of breast cancer in women and has been found to be effective, producing remission in about 20% of women with advanced breast cancer at an oral dosage of 50 mg/day. [4]
