The entire franchise is set in Sylvania (シルバニア, Shirubania), a fictional village somewhere in North America, later revised to Great Nature.The majority of the families are all rural middle-class, with many of them owning localized but successful family businesses, or having jobs, such as doctor, teacher, artist, news reporter, carpenter or bus driver.
One of the tapes was known as Sylvanian Families: The Movie, which despite the name, just featured segments edited together to form a film. In February 2004, Sterling Entertainment released two VHS/DVD's, titled The Big Adventure and Hoppily Ever After, each containing 3 episodes (6 segments). An extra segment was included on the DVD versions.

Stories of the Sylvanian Families is a children's television series directed by Jo and Martin Pullen, and produced by FilmFair. It is the second animated series based on the Sylvanian Families media franchise , and the only one animated in stop motion .
