In Kali, open a terminal window and run the following commands: # adduser mike Add a user for remote login. Set a password and other info. # usermod -aG sudo mike Get an updated list of installable packages. # systemctl start ssh Start the base ssh server. On your PC, download and install Putty. Open putty.
This is probably related to Kali no longer defaulting to root (to protect the user). So you basically have to force single user login in order to be able to mount the file system and repair it with upgrades. Steps: 1) Create / use the live USB you would normally use to install Kali. 2) Boot into Kali Live.

The steps taken to reproduce the issue are simple. with or without keyboard/mouse plugged in: Code: apt-get update reboot -h now. normal functionalitywith keyboard/mouse plugged in, or even after unplugging keyboard/mouse before executing reboot: Code: apt-get upgrade reboot -h now.

1) download kali linux. 2 ) use the latest version of UNetbootin ( unetbootin-windows-583 ) 3 ) plug in you're USB stick ( it should be FAT32 formatted ) launch UNetbootin and "burn" the image to you're USB stick. remove you're USB stick correctly. if you use earlier versions of UNetbootin the startup menu is not correct.
Select it and click continue. After that select "create new partition" and press continue. Select the size you want the partition to be and press continue. Choose beginning and press continue. Then select "done setting up" and afterwards "finish partitioning". From here on, follow the on-screen instructions and your system should install.
No device for installation media was detected. So 2 different usb thumb drives and 3 different versions of boot disk maker software (Rufus 308 and 3.11, BalenaEtcher current) and each 2020 kali installler iso gets stuck at the Detect and Mount installation media phase. Curious since it booted to the media and launched the installer okay.
