Shinobi Life began as a series of one-shots published in Akita Shoten's shōjo manga magazine Princess in 2005 and 2006. A full-scale serialization began in the August 2006 issue of Princess on July 6, 2006, concluding in the April 2012 issue on March 6, 2012. A bonus spin-off story was published in the May 2012 issue on April 6, 2012.
The film was shot at the Inba Marsh in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Onibaba was inspired by the Shin Buddhist parable of yome-odoshi-no men (嫁おどしの面, bride-scaring mask) or niku-zuki-no-men (肉付きの面, mask with flesh attached), in which a mother used a mask to scare her daughter from going to the temple.
The series revolves around seven high school students who are internationally renowned for their exceptional abilities. They include Prime Minister Tsukasa Mikogami, genius inventor Ringo Ohoshi, former ninja and journalist Shinobu Sarutobi, world renowned doctor Keine Kanzaki, swordswoman Aoi Ichijo, skilled magician Prince Akatsuki and multi-millionaire Masato Sanada.
