Coalburg, Ohio, rarely Coalburgh, is an unincorporated tract in northwestern Hubbard Township, Trumbull County, at approximately 41 degrees and 11 minutes North, 80 degrees and 35 minutes West. [1] It was never a city, a town or a village.
The area of Mineral Ridge was primarily a farming community, with some coal mining in the 1830s. In the mid-1850s, John Lewis, superintendent of the Mineral Ridge Coal Mines, discovered black band iron ore beneath the layers of coal ore, leading to a boom of companies working with the blast furnaces of Brier Hill, Niles, and later, Mineral Ridge itself. A post office called Hubbard was established in 1826. [9] Until 1861, Hubbard was a relatively small town, but the development of the local coal and iron industries rapidly developed the town over the decade. [8] Hubbard was incorporated a village in 1868, with Nathaniel Mitchell serving as the first mayor. [10]
As the Youngstown-Andover line was being built, the MCR constructed a 2.85-mile (4.59 km) long branch from Tyrrell, Ohio, to the coal mines in the southeast part of Vienna Township, Ohio (known as the "No. 9 Coal Bank Branch"), [6] and a 0.75-mile (1.21 km) spur across the north side of Hubbard, Ohio to the blast furnaces of the Andrews & Hitchcock Iron Company.
