In contrast to its F-Series pickup trucks (which used a dedicated truck body and chassis), the Ranchero was adapted from a Ford two-door station wagon, integrating the cargo bed with the two-door body.
The two-door hardtop and convertible were dropped, while the station wagon and Ranchero were moved to a larger platform shared with the contemporary Fairlane.
