Graduate Program. The History Department began teaching graduate students about a century ago. Its program has usually been one of moderate size. Admission is competitive, with six to twelve students admitted each year.
The Doctoral Degree. Students will be admitted to the doctoral program only if they have first earned an M.A. degree in history at UK or at another institution. Advising. Upon admission to the program, each student is assigned a faculty advisor in the student’s general field of study.

Related Courses Outside of History (9 hours) Students must complete 9 credit hours at the 200+ level in “related” fields outside of history (the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, mathematics, and natural and applied sciences).
We are working together to excel in teaching and scholarship of history that connects to our local and global communities. History is home to 30 faculty and 1 staff member. We have about 250 undergraduate majors and minors, and about 50 graduate students between the M.A. and Ph.D. programs.
