Layne Thomas Staley (born Layne Rutherford Staley; August 22, 1967 – April 5, 2002) [2] [3] was an American singer and songwriter who was the original lead vocalist of Alice in Chains, which rose to international fame in the early 1990s as part of Seattle's grunge movement.
Alice in Chains was one of the most successful bands of the 1990s, selling over 20 million records worldwide, [82] and over 14 million records in the US alone. [83] Their debut album, Facelift , was released in 1990 and has been certified double-platinum by the RIAA, selling over two million copies. [ 84 ]
The show marked Alice in Chains' only appearance as a five-piece band, adding second guitarist Scott Olson. [77] A live album of the performance was released in July 1996, which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, [79] and was accompanied by a home video release, both of which received platinum certification by the RIAA. [9]
In the early ‘90s, Alice in Chains was one of several Seattle grunge bands that took the world by storm, selling millions alongside their friends and peers in Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden.
The Larry King Show was an American overnight radio talk show hosted by Larry King. It was broadcast nationally over the Mutual Broadcasting System from January 1978 to May 1994. A typical program consisted of King interviewing a guest, then taking phone calls from listeners for the guest, and then taking phone calls on any topic. [ 1 ]
Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity from 1996 onwards due to Staley's substance abuse, which resulted in his death in 2002. The band reunited in 2005 for a live benefit show [ 3 ] and toured in 2006 with William DuVall taking over as lead vocalist full-time.
