    The few times I needed to buy an Amex physical gift card (I like to purchase these cards since they can be personalized) I called tha Amex platinum number and asked if there was any code to bypass the fee - each time I have been provided a code and have never paid (no would I) any fee to purchase a gift card.

    The only alternatives to hitting MQDs via spend are (1) you can waive the Silver/Gold/Plat MQD requirement by spending $25k+ on eligible DL-branded AMEX cards, or waive the Diamond MQD requirement with $250k+ spend, or (2) have DL approve a change to a foreign address on your SkyMiles account, in which case the MQD requirement is waived entirely.

    AmEx probably wanted to put out a simple message and not go into excruciating details as to which gift cards are okay or not. Actually, if you parse that carefully, they sort of did say that: "gift cards and other cash equivalents" -- "other" means that they were counting gift cards that are cash equivalents, meaning Visa/MC/Amex gift cards ...

    On various Amex cards, the gift card exclusion shows even for earning ordinary points. It’s not showing on all cards explicitly for ordinary points, but does on some; here are a couple of examples: Blue Business Plus card (link), Gold card (link) Blue Cash Everyday (link).
