May 24, 2017. #1. A few months ago I purchased a piece of a spiderwood type driftwood to put in my betta 's tank. I took the last month and a half to soak the briftwood in a 5 gallon bucket, for a week on one side of the wood and a week on the other side. (The piece was too large for the bucket) but I forgot it was in there and haven't changed ...

I am about 13 days into a fishless cycle and the driftwood has developed a white fuzz. It has been there for a while but I am only just wondering about it.
I took both wood pieces out and soaked in bleach water for a few hours, then soaked in dechlorinated water for an hour, repeated the dechlorination process a few times. I put both pieces back in last night. I also changed out 95% of the tank's water. This morning the white slime is back.
Some of the wood I collected needs 2-3 pounds minimum to barely hold it down. Good hardwood that will last does not always soak up water quickly. Soft or deteriorated woods are much easier to submerge but they generally rot in the tank as a downside. Advertisement.

Jul 14, 2007. #2. Driftwood will lower your pH drastically only if it is allowed to leach tannins into the water. I'm guessing you either soaked your driftwood before putting it in the aquarium, or else got pre-soaked driftwood. Driftwood that is not soaked will stain the water brown, and the tannins that stain the water brown also lower the pH.
So I added a medium piece of driftwood into my 29 gallon about a month or two ago. I boiled it in water for 2 hours, let it soak overnight, & then added to the tank in the morning. But it's still leaking tannins! I knew it would, but I didn't realize that even after the soaking & boiling it would make my tank water slightly brown.

I threw in some pond snails and they went bananas over it. By the time it was halfway gone I had added my BN pleco and he devoured what was left of it overnight.
Dec 8, 2019. #10. I bought a "medium" sized MopanI from Zoo Med on the Chewy site. I also just received a "medium" and "large" sized Malaysian driftwood from Blue Ribbon off the Ken's Fish site. All pieces were good sized, didn't receive a "stick". Ha. Hard to order sight unseen pieces of wood, but the prices were decent. I would buy them again.
