Iona is an original member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, which began play in men's basketball with the 1981–82 season. The Gaels have compiled the most victories of any MAAC team since the founding of the conference and have won a league record seven MAAC titles.
Iona University has been competing in Division I basketball since the school's inception in 1940. Their first taste of success came with the ECAC men's basketball tournaments (essentially regional tournaments played by Division I schools that were essentially independent, with Iona being in the Metro) in 1979 and 1980, winning the two years for an autobid to the NCAA Tournament.
Anderson played college basketball at Wesleyan University from 1991 to 1995, where as of 2022 he ranks 11th all-time in career scoring. [4] Anderson then earned a Master's Degree in Athletic Administration from Florida State University , graduating in 1996.
Crew Davis ran for 242 yards and four touchdowns for the Gaels, who did not lose to a CHSFL opponent this season.

The Gaels are currently led by head coach Alyssa Tiumalu. The team plays its home games at the Donald E. Walsh Field at Rice Oval located on the university's campus. [2]
