The Goldfields Track, runs from the summit of Mount Buninyong to Bendigo, and is divided into the Eureka Track, Wallaby Track, Dry Diggings Track and Leanganook Track. A separate leg of the Great Dividing Trail, the Lerderderg Track, branches from Daylesford to Bacchus Marsh .
In an attempt to return native fauna to the mount, a Koala Park was established in 1943. The park was stocked with koalas from Phillip Island and managed by a committee of local residents. This park was later relocated and enlarged. It was abandoned in 2009. Leanganook picnic facilities are located near the entrance to the former Koala Park.

The track from the east reached the Karamea gorge in 1897. Track-building from the western end began in 1894, and by 1899 there was 4.5 miles (7.2 km) of cart road, a pack track and a roughly cut route from the west that met with the track from the eastern end at Stag Flat near the Little Wanganui Saddle.
The initial 0.730 km (0.454 mi) race circuit was constructed in 1968 and the first race meeting was staged in March of the following year. [1] The circuit was bitumen sealed in 1997 and an extension to 1.200 km (0.746 mi) was subsequently undertaken. [1]
The track is 4.940 km (3.070 mi) [5] long in a harbourside location similar in style to the Circuit de Monaco and the Valencia Street Circuit. The circuit was designed by KBR, [6] and is a modification of the original one first proposed by Hermann Tilke. [6] The circuit has a FIA Grade 1 license. [7]
