There was co-education until 1952, as there was no college for the girls. On 9 April 1949, the college was renamed "Government Arts College, Hyderabad". Later, on 7 March 1951, the college was renamed "Government College Hyderabad" through a government resolution and was allowed to teach up to B.Sc. level in affiliation with Sindh University.

The Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) are a list of 40 academic institutions funded either by the Government of India or the State governments of India that participate in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for the admission process into their undergraduate programs in architecture, planning, sciences, and various branches of engineering and technology.
The Bachelor of Science courses were introduced in 1962 and the institution was named as "City Science College". City College was taken over by the government from Osmania University in 1965 and was renamed as Government City Science College. In 1967, B.A. and B.Com. courses were added and the college became "Government City College". [4]
In 1931, it was renamed as Osmania Technical College. After India gained independence in 1947, the institution's name was changed to Government Polytechnic Hyderabad in 1954 and technical courses were introduced with two branches of study: Civil, and Automobile. In 1957, a course in the branch of telecommunications (electronics) was added.
The institute is affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH), The institute has Autonomous Status till 2021-2031 A.Y. granted by UGC and offers a four-year Bachelor of Technology, in eleven disciplines and two-year Master of Technology, in six disciplines prescribed by JNTU.
