Soon afterwards a site was selected for a permanent course on Hardey's property – this became the Perth Race Course (later Ascot Racecourse). In 1852, the West Australian Turf Club was formed. [2] [3] The inaugural Perth Cup was held in 1887. [4] [5] In 1885 a railway was constructed to the northern side of Swan River opposite the racecourse. [6]
The Perth Glory currently competes in the national A-League as the only representative from WA. They were crowned A-League Premiers in the 2018-19 season. In the previous National Soccer League , Perth Glory was a relatively successful team by winning the last titles of the NSL (2002-03 & 2003-04).
Perth Glory have played occasional preseason matches at the ground, including for the recent 2015 Call to Arms Cup match against the WA state team. The University of Western Australia has won the Syme Cup a total of 16 times. The club sent their first Men's team to the 1934 InterVarsity Hockey which was held in Adelaide, SA and won by The University of Melbourne (MUHC), and won their first Syme Cup in 1946 when the carnival was held in Perth, WA. The Men's Team Mascot is Tonka the Truck.
