Maria-Theresia-Gymnasium is one of Munich's oldest schools. It is situated on Regerplatz in the Munich district Au. The school year starts after the summer break (different from state to state, usually end/mid of August) and is divided into two terms. There are typically 12 weeks of holidays in addition to public holidays. Exact dates differ between states, but there are generally six weeks of summer and two weeks of Christmas holiday.
The school was founded by Simon Spitzweg, the father of the famous painter Carl Spitzweg. In 1901 the students moved into the school house planned by Theodor Fischer. Peace activist Marie Zehetmaier was one of the first women to get a job as a physics and math teacher. From 1905 she taught at the Luisengymnasium. [1]
By law, "the Sundays and the public holidays remain protected as days of rest from work and of spiritual elevation" (Art. 139 WRV, part of the German constitution via Art. 140 GG). Thus all Sundays are, in a manner, public holidays – but usually not understood by the term "holiday" (except for, normally, Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday).
In 2016, a second campus in Munich-Schwabing (Leopoldstraße) was opened for primary students. The school currently has a combined enrolment of approximately 1200 students aged 3 to 18 from over 52 countries speaking more than 70 languages. Includes children of employees of the European Patent Office in Munich, of European Union institutions, of teachers, and of administrative and ancillary staff of the school. These children are required to be admitted to the school, and parents are exempt from paying tuition fees.
