Vasovagal syncope can be considered in two forms: Isolated episodes of loss of consciousness, unheralded by any warning symptoms for more than a few moments. These tend to occur in the adolescent age group and may be associated with fasting, exercise, abdominal straining, or circumstances promoting vaso-dilation (e.g., heat, alcohol).

An ectopic atrial rhythm occurring near the sinus node may also mimic Inappropriate sinus tachycardia. Syncope or pre-syncope may occur in IST patients and be the dominant symptom, with associated prodromal symptoms such as diaphoresis and visual blurring, leading to the diagnosis of vasovagal syncope and the diagnosis of IST being overlooked. Tilt table testing could provoke fainting or syncope. It is the purpose of the test to provoke these symptoms, in order to aid in diagnosis.
