The highway was established in 1941 or 1942 as a new primary routing from SC 170 to SC 46 in Bluffton, existing entirely in Beaufort County. [4] In 1956, SC 462 ceded some of its routing to SC 46 (Bluffton Road). [5]
The road is maintained by the National Park Service and has been designated an All-American Road.Commercial traffic is prohibited along the entire route, and the speed limit is 50 miles per hour (80 km/h), except north of Leiper's Fork, Tennessee, and Ridgeland, Mississippi, where the speed limit is reduced to 40 miles per hour (64 km/h).
