A video titled "Asteroid Discovery From 1980 - 2010" was one of Manley's early YouTube successes. The video is a computer animation showing a time-lapse of the Solar System from 1980-2010. When the time-lapse reaches the day an asteroid is discovered, it appears on the map as a bright green dot and continues orbiting the Sun.
(458732) 2011 MD 5 is an Apollo near-Earth asteroid around 1.2 kilometers (0.75 miles) in diameter. It is the largest asteroid known to have passed closer than the Moon. [4] On 17 September 1918 the asteroid passed 0.00234 AU (350 thousand km; 0.91 LD) from Earth [3] with a peak apparent magnitude of around 8.4.
Trajectory of asteroid 2005 YU 55 compared with the orbits of Earth and the Moon on 8–9 November 2011. Apparent trajectory on 8–9 November 2011. In February 2010, (308635) 2005 YU 55 was rated 1 on the Torino Scale for a potential pass near Earth on 10 November 2103, [12] that posed no unusual level of danger.
2011 MD was observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope in February 2014 and estimated to be 6 meters (20 ft) in diameter. [4] The asteroid is a porous rubble pile with a density similar to water. [4] On 19 June 2014, NASA reported that asteroid 2011 MD was a prime candidate for capture by the Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) in the early 2020s. [10]
The asteroid has an Earth minimum orbit intersection distance of 0.0020 AU (300,000 km), which corresponds to 0.8 lunar distances (LD). On 19 July 2015, it passed about 2.5 million kilometers from Earth (6.5 LD), [ 1 ] attracting the interest of astronomers. [ 1 ]
The small asteroid, measuring about a metre across, did not pose a threat to life. It was the third space rock detected imminently before impacting the Earth this year, but only the tenth on record.
A list of known near-Earth asteroid close approaches less than 1 lunar distance (384,400 km or 0.00257 AU) from Earth in 2011. [note 1] Rows highlighted red indicate objects which were not discovered until after closest approach
