Schlumpf Speed Drive. A Schlumpf Drive is a two-speed planetary gear assembly for use on bicycles and unicycles. It is distinct from other bicycle planetary gear assemblies in that it is located behind the chainring rather than in the rear hub. A push-button on each side of the axle allows the rider to switch between high and low ratios.
The Schlumpf Mountain Drive and Speed Drive have been available since 2001. [14] Some systems offer direct drive plus one of three variants (reduction 1:2.5, increase 1.65:1, and increase 2.5:1). Changing gears is accomplished by using your foot to tap a button protruding on each side of the bottom bracket spindle. The effect is that of having ...
Before epicyclic gears were used in bicycle hubs, they were used on tricycles. Patents for epicyclic hubs date from the mid-1880s. [5] [6] The first patent for a compact epicyclic hub gear was granted in 1895 to the American machinist Seward Thomas Johnson of Noblesville, Indiana, U.S.A. [7] This was a 2-speed but was not commercially successful.
Some variations on the traditional touring unicycle include the Schlumpf "GUni" (geared unicycle), which uses a two-speed internal fixed-geared hub. Larger direct-drive wheels tend to have shorter cranks to allow for easier cadence and more speed.
YT soon moved into mountain bikes, producing the downhill Tues, Wicked enduro bike, and the park-oriented Norton. In 2014, they launched their first carbon fiber bike, the Capra enduro bike. [5] YT expanded their linup with the all-mountain Jeffsy in 2017, [6] the Decoy e-bike in 2019, [7] the Izzo trail bike in 2020, [8] and the Szepter gravel ...
In the context of mountain biking the term compact crankset, or micro drive, refers to smaller triple cranksets, giving a small benefit in weight at the expense of increased wear and also giving the bike better clearance over obstacles. Typical ratios would be 22/32/44 teeth as opposed to 28/38/48 or 24/36/46 teeth.
With a chain drive transmission, a chainring attached to a crank drives the chain, which in turn rotates the rear wheel via the rear sprocket(s) (cassette or freewheel). There are four gearing options: two-speed hub gear integrated with chain ring, up to 3 chain rings, up to 12 sprockets, hub gear built into rear wheel (3-speed to 14-speed).
