The West Coast Trail, originally called the Dominion Lifesaving Trail, is a 75 km (47 mi) backpacking trail following the southwestern edge of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It was built in 1907 to facilitate the rescue of shipwrecked survivors along the coast, part of the treacherous Graveyard of the Pacific .
The area is the base for visiting the wilderness parks of Vancouver Island's southwest coast — the West Coast Trail and the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park, which includes the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. Beaches near Sooke include Sandcut, French Beach, Fishboat Bay, China Beach, and Mystic Beach.
[3] [4] Some sections of the trail will be available where it is accessible for non-motorized trail users, including bicycles or horse riders. The hiking trail project is being built and maintained by the non-profit Vancouver Island Trail Association (VITA). VITA is a part of 'Hike BC', the British Columbia wing of the National Hiking Trail (NHT).

The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail is a rugged 47 kilometres (29 mi) wilderness hiking trail located within Juan de Fuca Provincial Park along the southwestern coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The trail stretches from China Beach, 35 kilometres (22 mi) west of Sooke, to Botanical Beach, just outside Port Renfrew. [2]

Bamfield is a community that is surrounded by Crown Land, First Nation Lands belonging to the Huu-ay-aht Nations, and portions of the Pacific Rim National Park, located on Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The community, with a population of 179 as of 2016, [1] is divided by Bamfield Inlet.
It is located on the western coast of Vancouver Island between Cape Russell, [3] or Hanna Point, [4] and Cape Palmerston. [ 5 ] [ 2 ] The bay is about 15 km (9.3 mi) south of Cape Scott, the northwestern extremity of Vancouver Island, and about 34 km (21 mi) north of Quatsino Sound .
