United South High School is a high school located in the southern portion of Laredo, Texas, United States. It is a part of the United Independent School District . It consists of over 40 school organizations, [ 4 ] and mostly serves students with Hispanic ethnicity.
During the mid-1970s the school was relocated. Through 1999 the school was under the control of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Corpus Christi. In 2000 the Roman Catholic Diocese of Laredo was established and the control of the school transferred to it. St. Augustine School is accredited by the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department. Today, the district is located in Downtown Laredo. The San Agustin District is home to San Agustin Cathedral (which the district's named after) and to the Republic of the Rio Grande Capitol. Most of the district's streets are made from bricks. Most of the buildings in the district reflect Spanish and Mexican influences and are made from masonry.
The age distribution was 26.9% under 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who were 65 or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 80.4 males.
The St. Augustine High School football program has competed in the FHSAA football state playoffs 25 times, making their first appearance in 1972 under coach Herman "Foots" Brumley. The church was built between 1914 and 1915 and named San Agustín, after Augustine of Hippo who is traditionally considered the patron saint of the Puerta de Tierra neighborhood. The convent and school were officially founded on December 8, 1915. At the time, was the only church in the island that conducted daily services in English. [2] [4]
Republic of the Rio Grande Museum is a historic house museum located in the downtown San Agustin de Laredo Historic District in Laredo, Texas, United States, next to the historic La Posada Hotel and San Agustín Cathedral. [2] The Mexican vernacular structure was built in 1830 as a house with an addition in 1860.
