The present-day City College started as City School, founded on 6 January 1879, by the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj.It was raised at a college in 1881. B.A.Classes were introduced in 1884; a Law Department came up in 1885, and M.A. classes were introduced and conducted until the new regulations of Calcutta University terminated them.
The college started its journey with the Law department. In 1884, this college was elevated to a first-grade degree college. By the year 1920, the college began offering different undergraduate (BA/B.Sc) degree courses in arts and science. The college opened the Commerce Department in 1939, thereby becoming the largest college in Asia.

The college was started in 1966 [1] [3] for boys and girls by the efforts and donation of money and land by Gujarati community living in Kolkata. The Six-storied building was constructed with major donations from other city-based Gujarati industrialists and businessman. The college is managed through The Bhawanipur Gujarati Education Society.
