Out Front! is an album by pianist Jaki Byard recorded in 1964 (with one track from the 1961 session that produced Here's Jaki) and released on the Prestige label. [1]
Byard was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on June 15, 1922. [2] At that time, his parents – John Sr and Geraldine Garr – were living at 47 Clayton Street. [3] Both of his parents played musical instruments; his mother played the piano, as did his uncles and grandmother, the last playing in cinemas during the silent film era. [4]
AllMusic reviewer Thom Jurek states, "Byard was a true giant of jazz and this set, in excellent sound, displays all of the reasons". [2] All About Jazz's George Kanzler noted "Byard was at his uninhibited best as a solo pianist and this CD unearths a sterling solo set recorded in 1978 at a San Francisco jazz club".
The JazzTimes reviewer concluded that "This recording proves once again that cello and piano can make for a most agreeable duo." [1] The AllMusic reviewer stated that "There's a beautiful sense of harmonic understanding and freedom, a sense of timing beyond structured rhythms, and an empathy that these two retain simply by listening closely to one another."
All compositions by Jaki Byard except as indicated "There'll Be Some Changes Made" (Benton Overstreet, Billy Higgins) - 3:57 "Lonely Town" (Leonard Bernstein) - 5:29 "Blues au Gratin" - 3:29
