Cyclobenzaprine was approved for medical use in the United States in 1977. [5] It is available by prescription as a generic medication. [5] In 2022, it was the 45th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 13 million prescriptions. [8] [9] It was not available in the United Kingdom as of 2012. [10]
Another class of antispasmodics for such treatment includes cyclobenzaprine, carisoprodol, diazepam, orphenadrine, and tizanidine. Not all medications have a fixed relationship on this scale. Methadone is different from most opioids because its potency can vary depending on how long it is taken. Acute use (1–3 days) yields a potency about 1.5× stronger than that of morphine and chronic use (7 days+) yields a potency about 2.5 to 5× that of morphine.
