The XIT Ranch was a cattle ranch in the Texas Panhandle which operated from 1885 to 1912. Comprising over 3,000,000 acres (12,000 km 2 ) of land, it ran for 200 miles (300 km) along the border with New Mexico , varying in width from 20 to 30 miles (30 to 50 km).
Later, he became a cattle drover on the Chisholm Trail in Kansas. [2] [7] In 1873, he founded C. C. Slaughter and Company, a cattle breeding firm. [2] Four years later, in 1877, he purchased the Long S Ranch from Plainview to Big Spring, Texas, on the Staked Plains, the largest ranch in West Texas.
After the sale, Lyda retired to his 220,000-acre La Escalera Ranch south of Fort Stockton, Texas. By 1999, he had owned or traded more than 880,000 acres (3600 km²) of ranch real estate, including the large Ladder Ranch in southeastern New Mexico, which he eventually sold to Ted Turner and Jane Fonda. Lyda died in 2005.
