Clemson finished the 2019 season 14–1 and No. 2 in both polls. This was the Tigers' fifth straight season finishing in the top 4 for either poll. Clemson also ended a 29-game winning streak that was the nation's longest from 2018 to 2019. For the 2020 season, Clemson was again ranked pre-season No. 1 by both the AP and the Coaches' polls.

Clemson's Chris Gardocki kicked an 18-yard field goal as the Tigers built a 3–0 lead. They led 10–0 after DeChane Cameron threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Doug Thomas.
