The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) has the option for students to take either a computer-based examination or a paper-based examination. [1] Group tests mostly consist of multiple choice formats but some also include sentence completion or writing an essay, as does the GRE. Most group test scores are analyzed as percentiles.
The GRE is a standardized test intended to measure all graduates' abilities in tasks of general academic nature (regardless of their fields of specialization) and the extent to which undergraduate education has developed their verbal skills, quantitative skills, and abstract thinking.

These tests are usually proctored, meaning that testing takes place in a specific location in which students are given a prompt to write in response to within a set time limit.
