Canton is an unincorporated community within the township, although the name often refers to the whole township itself. It is located just south of M-153 (Ford Road) at The Canton post office, first established in 1852, serves an area conterminous with the township itself—using the 48187 ZIP Code north of Cherry Hill Road and the 48188 ZIP Code to the south.
The opening of the Erie Canal in October 1825 made the journey to Michigan easier and spurred settlement in Michigan. Land purchases in Canton Township peaked in 1833, and all but 14 of the 328 parcels were sold by 1836. [2] By the 1840 census, the population of Canton Township was 1081.
The Boys & Girls Club of Canton and city police are teaming up to bring the outpost to the J. Babe Stearn Community Center, which was founded in the early 1980s by the Police Department.
The Thomas and Maria Blackman Bartlett House (also known as the Bartlett-Travis House) [2] was built as a private house at the corner of Canton Center and Warren Roads. [3] It was donated to Canton Township [3] and relocated to its current site at 500 N. Ridge Road in Cherry Hill, Michigan.

Cherry Hill is an unincorporated community in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan.The community is located within Canton Township along Cherry Hill and Ridge Roads but otherwise has no legally defined boundaries or population statistics.
In 1825, Moses Bradford moved to Canton Township from Monroe County, New York, one of the first settlers to stake a claim in the area. [2] The following year, Aruna and Mary Bradford, Moses's parents, followed their son to Canton Township. [3] On arrival, they bought the property this house now sits on.
