Julius Caesar (billed on-screen as William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar) is a 1953 American film adaptation of the Shakespearean play, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and produced by John Houseman for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
The film was made by the newly created British Actors Film Company in response to news that American filmmaker D. W. Griffith intended to honor the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare's death with the production of a film version.
The film was first released on VHS in 1985 by MCA Home Video [67] in a reconstructed version that reinstated most of the footage cut from subsequent reissues. [68] The restored version was released on VHS by MCA/Universal in November 1991, [69] and was subsequently released on LaserDisc by The Criterion Collection the following year. [70]
