The Chickasaw Nation (Chickasaw: Chikashsha I̠yaakni) is a federally recognized Indigenous nation with headquarters in Ada, Oklahoma, in the United States.The Chickasaw Nation descends from an Indigenous population historically located in the southeastern United States, including present-day northern Mississippi, northwestern Alabama, southwestern Kentucky, and western Tennessee. Ada is a city in and the county seat of Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, United States. [4] The population was 16,481 at the 2020 United States Census . The city was named for Ada Reed, the daughter of an early settler, and was incorporated in 1901. [ 5 ]
Chickasaw Gov. Bill Anoatubby said he was pleased an agreement had been reached and that the tribe was ready to "tackle the long-standing safety issues involving the Crazy Corner intersection."
Pontotoc County is a county in the south central part of Oklahoma. As of the 2020 census, the population was 38,065. [1] Its county seat is Ada. [2] The county was created at statehood from part of the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory. It was named for a historic Chickasaw tribal area in Mississippi.
A report by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs dated 25 November 1841 says that around 4,600 Chickasaws already lived in Oklahoma (Indian Territory) while around 400 stayed in the east. In 1875 the Office of Indian Affairs reported that there were around 6,000 Chickasaws.
